Welcome from the ISCP President

14th International Society for Chinese Philosophy (ISCP) Conference with Australasian Society for Asian and Comparative Philosophy (ASACP) Stream

13-19 July 2005 University of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia

The ISCP draws its membership from amongst the most distinguished international scholars in the field of Chinese philosophy, in China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, Canada and North America, Europe and Australasia.

The 14th conference in Australia is a particularly significant one for ISCP as it is the first time the organisation meets outside the northern hemisphere.ISCP will also work collaboratively with the Australasian Society for Asian and Comparative Philosophy (ASACP) in hosting an ASACP stream. This collaborative endeavour is indicative of a recognition of the quality of Australasian research in the field.

The theme of the ISCP conference, Chinese Philosophy and Human Development in the 21st Century, and the theme of the ASACP stream, The Nature of Philosophy in the Asian Philosophical Traditions, are designed specifically to encourage participation of scholars interested in drawing insights from Asian philosophy as well as those seeking to share interdisciplinary insights. Panel and workshop discussions will focus on interdisciplinary debate in the following areas:

  • Values, health and ethics including conceptions of self, society and well-being Politics, international relations and globalisation issues
  • Trade, economy, business and human resource development
  • Culture, art and religion
  • The natural environment and natural resources, built environments, and the impact of development on the natural environment
  • Scientific and technological developments with particular emphasis on emergent ethical challenges

I would like to extend an especially warm welcome to the Public Address speakers, Professor Chung-ying Cheng (University of Hawaii), who will speak on Managing Business and Environment from the Perspective of Chinese Philosophy and Professor Nathan Sivin (University of Pennsylvania), on Chinese Medicine. Both of them are world-renowned leaders in their respective fields.

The plenary speakers are outstanding scholars in Chinese philosophy; they are Dr Nick Bunnin (Oxford University), Dr John Makeham (University of Adelaide), Professor Lisa Raphals (University of California) and Professor Yijie Tang (Beijing University).

The conference organising committee is committed to some financial assistance for participants from mainland China, and to provide adequate translation facilities in order to facilitate dialogue.

This conference would not have been possible without sponsorship from the various departments and organisations. In particular, I would like to thank the Arts Faculty of the University of New South Wales for generous sponsorship of the event.

I look forward to an exciting and enriching week of scholarly interchange and debate.
